Universities love TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms) and the wider research context is full of &#8217;em too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are new to research and\/or new to AUT, read on. This glossary is designed to help demystify the \u2018insider\u2019 language of academic research.\u00a0Each entry is marked to\u00a0identify\u00a0whether it is AUT-specific, or whether it applies throughout NZ or internationally.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can bookmark this page for those moments when you&#8217;re mystified by a seemingly random collection of letters. A major research funder for NZ health research. IP created through research is often held by researchers, though this may be shared with others, e.g. the university, collaborators, and\/or funders.\u00a0At the time of writing (February 2026), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbie.govt.nz\/about\/news\/new-ip-management-policy-to-boost-research-commercialisation\">government policy shifts<\/a> are changing research IP ownership. <\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>LTED<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aut.ac.nz\/about\/teaching-learning-and-assessment\/lted-office-of-learning-teaching-and-educational-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learning Teaching and Educational Design<\/a>. This AUT office supports teaching staff with pedagogy, curriculum design, digital learning, assessment, and issues around AI in teaching and learning.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>MBIE<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbie.govt.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ministry of Business, Innovation &amp; Employment<\/a>. This acronym is&nbsp;generally used&nbsp;to refer to the citation system&nbsp;established&nbsp;by the Association, which is widely used in the arts and humanities.&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>ORCID<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Open Researcher and Contributor ID<\/a>. These are stable identifying numbers attached to individual researchers (including postgraduate students) so that you can move institutions and\/or change your name without losing credit for your research record.&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>PBRF<\/strong><\/td><td><em>[Outdated].<\/em> Performance Based Research Fund. Now replaced with the TREF (Tertiary Research Excellence Fund); however the PBRF acronym lives on as it relates to residual funding streams. <\/td><td><\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong><\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>PG<\/strong>\u00a0<\/td><td>Short for postgraduate, and used to reference postgraduate students, study, or courses. PG study is completed after an undergraduate&nbsp;degree, and&nbsp;may include research and\/or coursework. (Often called \u201cgraduate\u201d internationally.)&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>PGR#<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><em>[Outdated].<\/em> Most AUT\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aut.ac.nz\/research\/postgraduate-student-support\/pg-forms-policies-and-processes\/forms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">forms<\/a>\u00a0for postgraduate research used to be coded PGR and then a number. They&#8217;re not anymore, but sometimes you&#8217;ll still hear &#8220;PGR#&#8221; as a shorthand for the stages in a degree (e.g. \u201cshe\u2019s doing her PGR9\u201d would mean that a doctoral student was completing her confirmation of candidature).\u00a0<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>PhD<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>Doctor of Philosophy, from the Latin&nbsp;<em>Doctor Philosophiae<\/em>. Sometimes called a DPhil internationally. This is a type of \u201cdoctorate\u201d or \u201cdoctoral degree,\u201d however is not synonymous with those terms as they also include professional doctorates such as the&nbsp;DHSc&nbsp;(Doctor of Health Science) and EdD (Doctor of Education).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>PI<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>Principal Investigator. This is the lead on a major research project. It is typically someone with&nbsp;significant experience, and they will often lead a wider research team.&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>PTF<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>Professional Teaching Fellow. This is a particular type of contract for tertiary-level teaching work. It is typically more senior than a TA position. Unlike many lecturing positions, it usually doesn&#8217;t include an expectation to do research. <\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>RA<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>Research Assistant. Someone (often a PG student or recent graduate) employed to work on a research project.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>RCAB<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>Research Committee of Academic Board. This is the group that guides research strategy and policy at AUT. It is chaired by the&nbsp;DVCR&nbsp;and faculties are represented by their ADRs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>RFNZ<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mbie.govt.nz\/science-and-technology\/science-and-innovation\/refocusing-the-science-innovation-and-technology-system\/research-funding-new-zealand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Research Funding New Zealand<\/a>. A new independent board under the auspices of MBIE that will make decisions on how and where to\u00a0disseminate\u00a0research funding.\u00a0\u00a0At the time of writing (February 2026) this is still in a transition phase. <\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>SAG<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><a href=\"https:\/\/student.aut.ac.nz\/postgraduate-research\/postgraduate-student-community-and-events\/student-advisory-group-doctoral-student-representatives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Advisory Group<\/a>. This group of postgraduate students and decision-makers meets regularly to ensure that students have input into postgraduate matters.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>SLT<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>Senior Leadership Team. Often used to refer to the leadership of a school, faculty, or university.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>STEM (or STEAM)<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td>Science, Technology, Engineering &amp; Mathematics. A quick way to refer to science-based disciplines, as opposed to humanities and arts subjects. Sometimes expressed as STEAM where it is intended to include arts.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><td><strong>\u2713<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>TA<\/strong>\u00a0<\/td><td>Teaching Assistant. TAs are usually postgraduate students, employed to teach tutorials and mark students\u2019 work for undergraduate courses. These are the people who make high-level decisions about postgraduate study at AUT. Every university has one, and they\u00a0are responsible for\u00a0setting the overall strategy and direction for the university. AUT\u2019s Vice Chancellor is Prof. Damon Salesa. (Tip: Despite the word \u201cvice,\u201d VCs are the people who lead universities on a day-to-day basis.
