{"id":4488,"date":"2015-09-24T15:21:01","date_gmt":"2015-09-24T02:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesislink.aut.ac.nz\/?p=4488"},"modified":"2016-08-01T10:07:30","modified_gmt":"2016-07-31T21:07:30","slug":"your-thesis-in-one-sentence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesislink.aut.ac.nz\/?p=4488","title":{"rendered":"Your thesis in one sentence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We here at Thesislink have noticed a recent trend towards summing up complex doctoral theses as briefly as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Whether they are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tickld.com\/x\/15-phd-students-dumb-down-their-thesis-just-for-us\">Dumbed-Down Theses<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/lolmythesis.com\/\">One-Sentence Theses<\/a>, these are dissertations for the Twitter era. And the interwebs are full of them right now.<\/p>\n<p>Some of my personal favourites include:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nanoparticles are weird and I accidentally made a bomb and electrocuted myself.&#8221; By <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tickld.com\/x\/15-phd-students-dumb-down-their-thesis-just-for-us\">M33<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A 100-page think piece about think pieces.&#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/lolmythesis.com\/post\/114581936295\/a-100-page-think-piece-about-think-pieces\">Source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dead birds were really sexy. Before they were dead, that is.&#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/lolmythesis.com\/post\/70731178783\/dead-birds-were-really-sexy-before-they-were\">Source<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>This trend is a little like 3 Minute Thesis, in which you have to boil your thesis down to a 3 minute talk with one slide. Except this makes 3 minutes seem positively expansive.<\/p>\n<p>After a lot of soul-searching, I think my dumbed-down thesis title would be:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Genetic engineering could produce superhumans, but fiction is all like, nah&#8230; probably\u00a0 not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Phew, that is shorter than my actual thesis title!
