Is this a big deal?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This post by Shari Hearne (Associate University Librarian, Digital Information Services)\u00a0first appeared here\u00a0on Thesislink in 2012<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A \u2018cautionary tale\u2019 of a person unexpectedly finding his thesis was for sale while searching Google appeared in the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/Dissertation-for-Sale-A\/132401\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chronicle of Higher Education<\/a><\/em> on 25 July, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Google search brought me to a link to BarnesandNoble.com, where with one click I soon discovered that my dissertation was being sold. It took a minute of staring at the computer screen to fully accept that my work could be purchased \u2026 as an eTextbook for the Nook reader. I thought the price was a steal. Literally \u2026 I felt violated that my work could be sold without my knowledge, confused as to how this could happen without my consent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How did this happen? It\u2019s a bit of a complex story, but when his dissertation was submitted to a well known dissertations and theses database \u2013 which users have to pay to access \u2013 he did not note that he was agreeing to \u201can option for third-party selling\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, though clearly he found this sale of his work with no payment of royalties to himself reprehensible, the comments on the post were not all in agreement with his view and some found it \u201cno big deal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>So \u2013 was it a big deal, or not? Is it important or not to keep track of what happens to your work after you\u2019ve submitted your thesis or dissertation?<\/p>\n<p>At AUT, theses and dissertations are required to be submitted to our open access research repository <a href=\"http:\/\/aut.researchgateway.ac.nz\/\">Scholarly Commons<\/a>.\u00a0The Library manages the research repository on behalf of AUT.
