But at the same time, we can often face a perfect storm of stressors: deadlines, financial pressures, academic expectations, family responsibilities, managing visas, milestones, outside work\u2026 the list goes on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps this is why postgraduate students report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nbt.4089\">worrying rates<\/a> of anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mental Health Awareness Week aims to shine a light on mental health issues and share tools for wellbeing. <a href=\"https:\/\/student.aut.ac.nz\/around-campus\/mental-health-awareness-week-2021\">At AUT, we\u2019re observing this week with a calendar<\/a> of workshops, mindfulness sessions, discussions, and fun events coordinated by our Counselling &amp; Mental Health team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Te Ao M\u0101ori (the M\u0101ori world), hauora (health &amp; wellbeing) is conceptualized as having four components:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>taha hinengaro (mental wellbeing)<\/li><li>taha tinana (physical wellbeing)<\/li><li>taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing)<\/li><li>taha whanau (social wellbeing)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The sessions on offer this week bring in that broad focus on nurturing our whole selves \u2013 mind, body, and spirit \u2013 and connecting us with others. (Learn more about this on Tuesday in a session called \u2018An interactive approach to wellbeing and Te Whare Tapa Wh\u0101\u2019 at 2pm via <a href=\"https:\/\/us02web.zoom.us\/j\/82398919304?pwd=ZEoybUs4V0R4ejNNVWpkYWZoYmxHQT09#success\">Zoom<\/a>, passcode 509860.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A highlight for PG students will be the \u2018Building Resilience\u2019 session on Wednesday at 11am via <a href=\"https:\/\/aut.zoom.us\/j\/94745061196?pwd=bmNQeFhhQnFocjlYVWtsYXhZRCthQT09#success\">Zoom<\/a>, passcode 586847. It takes real fortitude to get through the demands of a research degree, and this session will introduce tools for developing that resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019re struggling and want some help, or you\u2019re thriving and want to stay that way, we encourage you to get involved and invest some time in your own wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Counselling &amp; Mental Health team also supports students year-round with <a href=\"https:\/\/student.aut.ac.nz\/support-services\/counselling-and-mental-health-support\">free counselling<\/a> and (for our postgrad wh\u0101nau) <a href=\"https:\/\/student.aut.ac.nz\/postgraduate-research\/postgraduate-student-community-and-events\/postgrad-students-wellness-toolkit-sessions\">PG Wellness Toolkit<\/a> sessions every month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noho haumaru noho pai (stay safe and stay well).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Working toward a research degree can be incredibly rewarding&hellip; and incredibly challenging.
