Time to Start Thinking About the PG Research Symposium & 3MT

Got some research to share? Wanna meet other postgrads? Win some prizes? Just get out of the dang office? Well you’ll be happy to learn that the most exciting time in the postgrad calendar is fast approaching.

Over the next few months, we’ll be crafting abstracts, taking presentation workshops, and practicing our ‘thoughtful podium faces’ in preparation for two big events on Friday, August 16, 2019:

2019 Postgraduate Research Symposium

3 Minute Thesis Competition

These are AUT’s showcase events for our talented postgrad researchers. If you’ve never been before, here’s the deal. For one wonderful day, postgrads, supervisors, faculty staff, and the Graduate Research School team congregate for a celebration of our postgraduate research students.

At the PG Research Symposium, you are invited to present your work in one of three formats: oral presentation, creative exhibition, or poster presentation. Just like at an academic conference, you’ll need to submit an abstract first. We at the GRS will provide feedback on your abstract, allowing you to polish it for publication in the Symposium programme. Then on the day, you can present your research to a friendly audience! (Bonus: add the presentation to your CV.)

You are also invited to enter the AUT 3 Minute Thesis competition. The premise of the competition – 3MT for short – is to present your research in lay terms in just 3 minutes, with only one slide. You’ll battle it out in the heats in July, and then the talented finalists will grace the stage for the AUT finals on August 16! The winners will score some great prizes, including paid travel to the NZ finals (Masters) or the Asia-Pacific finals (doctoral).

If you’d like to present at the PG Research Symposium or compete in the 3MT contest, you’ll need to start preparing now. Both events have an application deadline of 21 June 2019. Check out the PG Symposium Call for Abstracts here, or the application form for 3MT here.

If you’d like some help with your preparations, check out our tie-in workshops. PG Research Symposium entrants can benefit from attending the ‘Writing an Abstract for a Conference or Symposium‘ workshop on 8 May, 22 May, or 12 June. 3MT entrants should consider attending the ‘Presentation Skills – Three Minute Thesis‘ workshop on 27 May or 18 June. Book your place via eLab.

As always, you can email the Graduate Research School at grs@aut.ac.nz with any questions. We look forward to hearing all about your work!
