AUT has always been strong on applied research. It’s a point of pride: we’re out there in the real world, solving real problems, and enacting positive change. So it’s no surprise that Action Research (AR) is common here.
AR is all about connecting theory with practice. It often involves identifying a problem, and enacting a solution while performing the academic work of observing and reflecting on the efficacy of that solution. It also often involves deep relationship-building, and co-design, with the people involved in the research (and is sometimes called Participatory Action Research for this reason). AR is an incredibly powerful way to use the research process to make an impact, and it’s something AUT does particularly well.
If you’d like to learn more about AR, you’re in luck! Several of our AR superstars are joining forces next month to offer a free Action Research Masterclass. This is open to all AUT postgraduate research students, and you can attend online or on the Akoranga campus.

This two-part Masterclass begins with a taster for those new to action research and progresses to a deeper dive into the underlying philosophies of action research and practice-led research methodologies for those interested in their application within the AUT context. Join us for Part 1 or Part 2 or stay with us for the duration. We will conclude the session with lunch at Tukutuku Café (buy-your-own) and informal conversations.
This Masterclass is a precursor to the ALARA (Action Learning, Action Research Association) World Congress, which will be co-hosted at AUT on 18-19 September 2025.
Whether you are new to Action Research, or already working with practice-based methodologies, we invite you to join us. There will be an opportunity to connect and join a Community of Practice to keep the conversation going.
Full details are in the flyer below, and you can register for the Masterclass here.
