New AUT Policy: Research Data Management Made Clear

If you’re a researcher at AUT, chances are you’ve got data—maybe a little, maybe a lot. Whether it’s interview transcripts, survey results, lab measurements, or digital archives, managing that data well is crucial. AUT now has a new policy to help guide you through it.

The Research Data Management Policy, effective from 1 August 2025, sets out clear expectations for how research data should be handled by AUT staff and students. It’s all about ensuring your data is organised, stored, and shared responsibly—not just for your own peace of mind, but to meet the standards expected by publishers, collaborators, funders, and governing bodies.

Good data management isn’t just a box to tick. It boosts the visibility and impact of your research, helps you stay compliant with legal and ethical requirements, and supports data sovereignty where applicable. It also makes life easier in the long run—think fewer admin headaches and smoother project workflows.

Importantly, the policy aligns with AUT’s commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and reflects international best practice in research data management. So, whether you’re just starting your thesis or deep into data analysis, this policy is here to support you.
