2013 AUT Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Winner – Jule Kunkel

Author: Jule Kunkel, PhD Candidate (Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences)

I can’t stop asking myself, “Why aren’t there more 3MT participants?” Sure, postgrads are notoriously short of time. Some also don’t like getting up to talk in front of a group. And the latter is exactly a reason why you should do it! While the time investment is reasonable (after all, you only have to prepare three minutes), the benefits and learnings are highly useful. I have found it a crucial skill to be able to explain my research and sell it to an audience.

The 3MT competition provides a supportive environment to practice and improve this skill. We often have limited time to explain ourselves, for example in the viva. Mastering the challenge to squeeze a huge research project into three minutes will surely help me with that. I truly appreciated the opportunity to gain all those experiences and the confidence, share my research, and also learn about other projects and fields at AUT. When else to you get the chance to hear about so many different, interesting projects from all parts of the university, each condensed into three minutes?

Healthy regards,

Jule Kunkel
(PhD Candidate)
