Entries Open for Three Minute Thesis (3MT) 2025

Enter now! Applications close Friday 4 July 2025.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ). Competitors have three minutes to present their thesis and its significance in an inspiring and captivating way. AUT runs a 3MT competition every year, and it’s a great chance to share your research with the world!

Why enter 3MT?

  • You’ll build your skills in research communication
  • The prizes are excellent! (Think tech gear and cash research awards)
  • The AUT winner will earn a place in the highly prestigious Asia-Pacific finals
  • It looks great on your CV! (Especially if you’re a finalist / winner)

Read more information about the 3MT Competition on the AUT website. You can also watch videos of our past winners for inspiration!

Applications for the 2025 3MT Competition are now open for doctoral students, including professional doctorates. Active doctoral candidates who have successfully passed their Confirmation of Candidature (including students whose thesis is under submission) by the date of their first presentation are eligible to participate in the 3MT competition. Graduates are not eligible.

Entry is by video submission, and your video will need to present your research clearly, with one slide, in 3 minutes. It’s a tough job to articulate a complex research project in just a few minutes, but fear not! Help is at hand:

  • You can find some tips for producing your video (including what you say, how you say it, designing your slide, and doing the video recording/editing) here on Thesislink
  • You don’t need advanced video editing skills, and the quality of the video and the editing will not impact upon scores
  • There will be coaching sessions available for those who would like some help preparing a presentation
  • You’ve got until 25 July to submit the actual video, so there’s plenty of time to get it right!

Entries for the doctoral 3MT competition close Friday 4 July 2025. Complete the entry form here. At this stage, all you need to do is signal your intention to compete – the actual video comes later.

Give it a go! There’s nothing to lose, and a lot to potentially gain.
