As a postgraduate student, you spend your days and, let’s be honest, many nights deep in research. You’re solving complex problems, discovering new insights, and pushing the boundaries of your field. But have you ever paused to wonder: could this research become something people use in the real world?
For many, the idea of launching a startup feels like a massive leap. It can sound risky, intimidating, or simply too far removed from academic life. But university is one of the best places to start. It offers a safe, supported environment where you can test commercial ideas, learn the language of innovation, and build confidence before stepping into the wider market.
That is exactly why Ara Hua | Idea2Impact exists.
Turning inspiration into impact
Run by AUT Ventures (AUT’s research commercialisation team), Ara Hua | Idea2Impact is an eight-week programme designed to help AUT students and researchers explore how their ideas could create real-world impact.
Across the programme, participants learn the fundamentals of commercialisation, including intellectual property, market validation, value proposition, revenue models, business structures, and pitch practice. The goal is not to arrive with a perfect business plan, but to develop the tools, confidence, and clarity to take the next step.
Participants who complete the programme may also qualify to apply for commercialisation funding to help progress their idea.
A growing community of postgraduate founders
The real magic of Idea2Impact lies in the people who back themselves and take their research, expertise, and ideas beyond the page.
AUT Ventures is proud to celebrate another cohort of postgraduate students who have completed the programme and pitched ideas with the potential to become real ventures. The latest Winter ’26 cohort winners are:
- Yashar Agha for OSA-W
- Erin Melbourne for PintyCar
- Thusithanjana Thilakarathna for PomoLog
- Crystal Myat Myat Soe for Burmese Pantry Essential
- Ehsan Arabanvari for GCCI Carbon Retrofit
They join a growing list of Ara Hua alumni, including the founders behind TableTale, LawMind, GlucoGold Yoghurt, LandLend, SoulSip, Qior, WasteScan, RAIN, gus-energy, adematic, and an Assisted Feeding Device.

Walking the entrepreneurial talk
Taking the leap is always easier with the right support. The programme is facilitated by Sabrina Nagel, who brings both teaching experience and lived entrepreneurial insight to the room.
Formerly part of the AUT Beta team, Sabrina has since launched her own business, Ignite Innovation. That means participants learn from someone who understands the reality of building something from scratch. Her approach has left a lasting impression on alumni, including Leah La Hood (Spring ’25 Cohort):
“I enjoyed everything about the program and got so much out of it. Everyone on the AUT Ventures team participated, got to know us and showed the utmost support.”
Building a supportive ecosystem
Beyond the technical skills of building a business, the programme is designed to demystify the startup world through guest speakers and peer collaboration. For Ademar Tutor (Spring ’24 Cohort), this environment was a highlight:
“[I loved] the tone of support and encouragement. It’s okay not to know and encouraged learning. I look forward to ongoing support and even collaboration among the cohort and a larger start-up community.”
Ready to test your idea?
You don’t need a polished pitch deck or a fully formed company to begin. You just need a research project, a business idea, or a problem you care about, and the willingness to explore where it could go.
If you want to test the commercial potential of your work alongside a community of like-minded AUT researchers and students, Ara Hua | Idea2Impact could be your next step.
Applications are now open for the 2027 cohorts, with dates to be confirmed.
