NVivo is the most widely used qualitative data analysis package internationally, and is certainly the most popular choice amongst New Zealand researchers. With the advent of packages such as NVivo, we are now able to achieve the exact same result electronically. Advantages in doing so include increased flexibility in handling data, easier retrieval of coded information, and analysis tools that allow you to ask questions of the coding that you have conducted. NVivo won’t analyse your data for you, but it will certainly make your life easier when dealing with qualitative data, particularly in the analysis stages.
The University Postgraduate Centre will be running 1 day NVivo workshops for postgraduate student researchers and supervisors in semester 2, 2012. The workshops offered are:
NVivo 9.2: Working with Data is an introductory training course that aims to introduce the range of data types that you can work with and code in NVivo. This includes word documents (such as transcripts), PDFs (including policy documents and literature), spreadsheets, databases, audio, video, and images.
NVivo 9.2: Extending Analyses follows on from Working with Data. This workshop looks at the ability to assign ‘attributes’ to cases in your project (such as individuals, organisations, or places) and use these attributes to ask questions of your coding e.g., “what did males in their twenties say about the theme I have coded about XYZ?”. The queries tool in NVivo also allows for the searching of particular words or phrases, or even the most frequently occurring words in your data. NVivo also has the ability to provide a range of reports or visually model aspects of your project.
Part of the session will also provide an opportunity to practice with your own data.
Target audience: Postgraduate student researchers and supervisors wanting an efficient means of handling and analysing their qualitative data. No prior knowledge of the software is assumed; however a basic understanding of qualitative analysis procedures would be helpful.
Contact information: The workshops are restricted to 12 participants attending. To register or find out more information about the dates for NVivo contact the following:
