  1. Finally a one-stop shop for those new (and not so new) to the joys of research! Terrific site which is sure to attract many views. Well done!

  2. Desperately seeking help with EA1. Does anyone have any advice on filling out the EA1 sections on Partnership, Participation and Protection – and E1 (familiarity of the researcher with the social and cultural context of the participants). What sort of things are they asking for?

What sort of things have other people covered in these sections?
    Any advice gratefully received.

  3. Dear vkr1795,

Thank you for your questions. For all applicants to the ethics committee help is at hand. Firstly, the Frequently Asked Questions section of the Ethics Knowledge Base gives extensive guidance about completing the EA1, in particular the sections on the Treaty and Partnership, Participation and Protection. As well as this advice, help and guidance is available from your faculty reps and Rosemary and Charles at the ethics committee:

Faculty of Business: Dr Mark Glynn mark.glynn@aut.ac.nz

Faculty of Culture and Society: Dr Antje Deckert antje.deckert@aut.ac.nz

Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies; Professor Barry King barry.king@aut.ac.nz

Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences: Dr Tineke Water tineke.water@aut.ac.nz

Te Ara Poutama; Dr Teena Brown Pulu teena.brown.pulu@aut.ac.nz

    Rosemary and Charles: ethics@aut.ac.nz

  4. In response to the EA1 question my recommendation for your first step is to ask around and see if someone will show you their successful application as an exemplar (most useful if it’s from your subject area). This makes a huge amount of difference to see how it is done here. I’d already done an ethics application at another university, and found the AUT process was quite different, requiring emphasis on areas which hadn’t been considered important previously. Cheers, ejk

    1. Having just completed my first EA1 draft, I can say with feeling that following two of the three suggestions above is a huge help. I talked to Rosemary (contact details above), who was very approachable. She definitely didn’t make me feel I was a postgrad with dumb questions, but instead spent time talking over my ideas, and I made some relatively major changes after talking to her. I’d never have got the original idea past the ethics committee. I also begged and borrowed two examples of EA1s from other postgrads who had recently got through AUTEC, and that was invaluable. Get a recent example if you can, as the forms change. Maybe this site could be a repository of a few (anonymous) EA1 forms. Happy to offer mine if it gets through. On the other hand, I found the FAQ part of the Ethics Knowledge Base not nearly as helpful. Take a look, but in my opinion it’s clunky to use and sometimes just repeats what’s already on the form. Nothing beats a live example, I reckon. Cheers N

  5. Amira.. me too. I had the same problem. There are people who are putting their effort to make this blog looked interesting and interactive, but we can’t respond to them…
